Internships

Many internship opportunities are only available for a few years. Those will be listed as they become known. Below is a list of long-standing internship opportunities. Most applications open in November or December and close in January or February.

National Institutes of Health

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;The largest. Students spend an entire summer doing research in an NIH lab. Internships are paid but housing is not provided. The program is highly selective and very prestigious. It is intended for students pursuing research or medicine after graduation.

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Juniors and seniors in biomedical research with financial need receive a very generous scholarship and spend a full summer for each year doing research in an NIH lab (paid). After graduation recipients are required to work for the NIH one year for each year of undergraduate support. The program is highly selective and very prestigious.

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Students with a BS or MS degree do paid research full time for 1-2 years while preparing to go on to a PhD or program or medical school. Students completing this program have a 100% success rate when they apply for graduate or medical school.

National Science Foundation

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Sites all over the country. Students spend an entire summer doing research in a faculty lab in a wide variety of fields. Internships are paid and participants receive housing and travel. Intended for students who may go on to graduate school.

Department of Energy

 â€” Sites throughout the country. Paid summer internships at a DOE lab in a wide variety of fields. Travel to site is available but housing is not.

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Paid summer internships targeted for women and members of underrepresented minorities in STEM. Research at a DOE lab. Sites across the country. Travel to site is available but housing is not.

Department of Defense

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Full tuition and education related fee scholarships. Summer research internships at DOD facilities across the country in a variety of fields. Employment placement after graduation.

(ORISE) â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;ORISE runs summer research internships for a number of government research labs. The application process is done centrally. They do not pay for housing so you either need to live within driving distance of an institute.

United States Department of Agriculture

The USDA offers paid internships at many of its sites throughout the country through the .

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

(NASA) â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Paid internships during the summer and academic semesters at NASA facilities in a variety of fields.

Amgen Scholars

 â€”&²Ô²ú²õ±è;Paid summer internship programs in biomedical sciences at top universities in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The DAAD  provides paid summer research opportunities in Germany for US citizens in a variety of fields. Housing and travel are also covered.
