Inclusive Teaching Collective

Members of the collective explore what it means to engage with culturally sensitive and affirming practices for the benefit of undergraduate and graduate students.

History

Based upon a shared experience in the Lumen Circles Fellows program on belonging and inclusive teaching, Prof. Iona Ringgold and Prof. Kathy Orlando created the Inclusive Teaching Collective (ITC), a shared inquiry space for faculty.

Since spring 2023, 14 faculty from five colleges and the Cook Library 鈥 including part time, full time undergraduate or graduate faculty, lecturers and adjuncts 鈥 have been engaged in ITC.

Purpose

At its core, ITC centers students鈥 belonging in our 快活视频learning environments. For each ITC in-person or zoom session, graduate and undergraduate 快活视频students join the faculty to share their experiences about 鈥渨hat it means to feel like I belong鈥 in learning spaces as well as to share ideas for faculty to try. Faculty debrief what they heard and discuss among each other the importance of our shared work for the students鈥 success.

Impact

As a result, ITC also centers 快活视频faculty goals for student success, and faculty are asked to bring an idea to their courses from what they are learning in ITC. Faculty are identifying goals, developing a plan and creating feedback loops. What makes ITC different is the focus on the C 鈥渃ollective鈥 as faculty work with a partner in this process. Partners have roles such as thought partners, co-planners, co-teachers or observers.

鈥淔itting in and belonging are not the same thing; rather, fitting in is a barrier to belonging. 鈥
