Veterans & Active Military Students

About 326 Towson University students in 2017 were active military personnel, veterans, or affiliated persons (e.g., ROTC), and that number is expected to grow.

Signs that counseling might be helpful

Returning home from deployment or service to a college environment produces a unique set of challenges. Transitioning to academic life is a process that requires support from others, especially if an individual has concerns that start to interfere with academic success. Examples of transitional concerns that are commonly discussed in counseling include:

  • Difficulty relating to students who don't share similar values or life experiences
  • Navigating the cultural differences between the military and higher education bureaucracies
  • Difficulty concentrating in the classroom
  • Balancing multiple roles
  • Feeling a sense of purposelessness
  • Feeling misunderstood by others
