Supporting, Empowering, Preparing the Next Generation of STEM Professionals

The Hill-Lopes Scholars program accepts 10 to 15 students each year.

Students receive a $1,000 scholarship each year, as well as financial support to attend professional scientific meetings and to participate in career-building conferences, workshops and educational trips.

Through a firm foundation of layered mentoring, bolstered by professional development experiences and career exploration events, scholars graduate from the program with a suite of skills necessary for their unique STEM journeys.

Applications open on April 1 and are due by June 1.

Acceptance Criteria

Students typically apply at the end of freshman or sophomore year.

Eligible students must:

  • Have completed 30 college credits, equivalent to one academic year
  • Be currently enrolled in the Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics (FCSM), with a declared STEM major.
  • Be able to participate in program meetings and required activities.
  • Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Have a desire to pursue a career in a STEM field.
  • Have attended info sessions during their first year.

Application Process

Students can apply to become Hill-Lopes Scholars in the spring semester of their first year at TU. Applications open every April 1 and are due every June 1.

  • Applications are facilitated through the .
  • The Hill-Lopes Science and Mathematics Scholars Program Scholarship should appear under your Recommended Opportunities. Select the Apply button to submit your application. If it is not listed under your recommended opportunities, please click on Opportunities in the black menu bar and select “Ours.” Scroll until you see the scholarship and apply.
  • After the Executive Board reviews applications, selected students are invited to a virtual interview. All applicants are notified of their application status by the end of June.
  • Applicants selected for interviews will also be asked to provide two Ƶfaculty members as references. At least one recommender needs to be an FCSM professor.
