Student Resources
Here are some useful resources for undergraduate geosciences students.
Internships and Job Opportunities
Geoscience students have lots of opportunities for internships with state or local governments, with federal science agencies like NASA, or Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) where students can apply to work (and get paid) to spend a summer working on a research project at universities around the country.
Field Research
The Geoscience faculty engage in a wide variety of research topics that reach both local and international communities. Dr. Burks studies the deformational history of the Maryland Piedmont and the tectonic history of Southeastern New England. Dr. Moore explores topics in chemical weathering and urban geochemistry with implications for soil and water quality. Dr. Nelson researches the evolution of the lithospheric mantle and the crust. Contact our faculty if you are interested in research on these and related topics.
Lab Research
Much of the field work described above involves collection of samples for analysis in the well-equipped laboratory facilities at Towson. Visit the Geosciences Facilities web page for more information.
Geosciences Club
The student-run Geosciences Club meets regularly to talk about geology, hang out, and plan field trips to look at the geology and cool scenery in places like Catoctin Mountain National Park. Contact faculty advisor Michelle Casey at mcasey AT_TOWSON to learn more.
Pelham Award
In recognition of Professor William F. Pelham's contributions to the Department of Physics, Astronomy & Geosciences, and Towson University, the department and friends of the department have established the William F. Pelham Award. The Pelham award is given to the outstanding junior majoring in a program available in the department.
