Additional Admission Requirements for Music Technology

Recording Studio

Music Technology lessons may fulfill the applied lessons in a single medium requirement for the Bachelor of Science Music Education and Bachelor of Science in Music degrees.  In order for us to assess your background and better understand your musical goals, you will need to submit the following materials in addition to the Towson University application and the Department of Music application.

Submission Materials

Portfolio: A selection of your work that provides a profile of the quality and variety of your experience with music technology.  The portfolio should include at least three examples of your work that you feel represents your experience with music technology well. This can include music in any genre and using various technologies including but not limited to: computer software, microphones, synthesizers, effects pedals, DJ equipment, etc. Portfolio submissions may include audio files, data files, or links to audio or video hosted online. Portfolios can be submitted on USB drives through mail or by emailing attachments or cloud sharing links.

Written Statement: A written statement (two-page maximum) regarding your musical background and goals in music.  This should include a description of your prior musical experience, a description of your musical influences, and general goals for your study of music technology.  Include a paragraph describing what attracted you to Towson鈥檚 music program.  Also include what instrument(s) or voice that you are currently studying.

Portfolio and written statement should be submitted at least two weeks before your scheduled audition date.

Review Process

The music technology faculty will review your portfolio and other application materials and then schedule a brief interview with you during departmental audition days. During the interview, we will ask you to discuss aspects of your experience and goals with music technology as well as completing the instrument and voice screening. We will also offer answers to any questions that you might have about our program at Towson University.

Instrumental Screening: Prepare your best performance on a conventional instrument of your choice (guitar, piano, clarinet, voice, etc.). This can include scales, chord progressions, improvisation, songs or compositions from sheet music or memory. The purpose of this screening is to assess your ability to succeed in ensembles and instrumental classes.

Voice Screening: The interviewers will play pitches on a piano. You will match those pitches with your voice. The purpose of this screening is to assess your potential to succeed in music theory and musicianship courses.

Based on the application materials, the portfolio review, and the interview, the music department will notify you regarding your acceptance status.
