You don’t need to be a seasoned graphic artist to build well-designed, effective materials for your audience. Creating customized (and brand approved) communications just got easier using Marq.

What is Marq?

Marq is an online application that allows Towson University to distribute templates so that non-designers can easily create materials that look professional and follow university brand standards. There are templates for postcards, brochures, posters, invitations and event programs, as well as digital signage, social media graphics and more. The system uses ¿ì»îÊÓƵbrand colors, fonts and logos, and it's easy to add your own text and images. Marq is user friendly — if you can use Microsoft Word, you can master Marq.

How can I access TU’s Marq templates?

TU’s Marq licenses are shared on a college/division basis. (Some licenses are provided to individual units that use the system regularly.) Every area that is allocated a Marq license has a designated coordinator. To access the ¿ì»îÊÓƵTemplates in Marq, reach out to your area coordinator for the login information.

Because ¿ì»îÊÓƵhas a limited number of Marq licenses, maildrops are used as user IDs (rather than individual email addresses). Maildrops let departments allow multiple people to log in to the same account and work on files together. Maildrops are created specifically to access Marq — for example,   — so anyone can use them without interrupting the normal flow of email to a departmental account. When working on files in Marq, it is important to setup a copy of your group’s maildrop inbox in your personal outlook account so that you can receive messages from the Marq system administrator.

Help. I can’t do what I want in Marq

It’s important to understand what Marq is, and what it is not. Marq templates allow you to create a wide range of materials, but they are templates, and several elements are locked down. For example, the size and shape of text boxes are locked into place. The size and position of a picture box is also dictated. The templates are not meant to do everything for everyone.

While Marq is user-friendly, you may run into something that you can’t figure out. If this happens, we recommend trying the Marq built-in help system.

If your project cannot be accommodated by existing templates, please contact Creative Services. Templates can be created or modified to meet specific needs, or you may need is a custom design from one of Creative Services’ designers.

Reproducing and distributing Marq projects

Marq projects can easily be exported to PDFs that can be printed using a desktop printer or reproduced by TU’s Printing Services, or as JPEGs that can be sent to a digital sign coordinator. But before anything can be exported, it must first be approved. Because the Marq templates are built to reflect and support the university brand, everything created in the system must first be reviewed and approved before it can be printed or downloaded. The system has a built-in approval system, and approvals almost always take 24 hours or less. We understand that emergencies happen, so if you need something approved quickly, please call Creative Services at 410-704-3247.

Responsibilities of a Marq area coordinator

If you are a Marq coordinator for your area, you are charged with three key responsibilities:

  • Controlling user access — Creative Services cannot determine who in your area should or should not be using Marq. We leave that to you. You have the login information, distribute it as you see fit.
  • Managing the maildrop — When a new user in your area is granted access to Marq (by you), they need to be provided access to the maildrop associated with the login. This is an important step because whomever is creating in Marq needs to be able to see when their project is approved or disapproved, and that comes into the maildrop access.
  • Organizing the departmental Marq space — We highly recommend creating a folder structure for departments / groups that will be using your area’s login.
