My overarching scholarship goal is to better understand the interrelationships between exercise performance, sleep and chronic disease/injury risk. To this end, I have launched two lines of research inquiry with collaborators at Towson and elsewhere. First, we are examining whether the improvements in cardiovascular health conferred through exercise are modified among those individuals suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. This has public health implications since sleep apnea is often undiagnosed in those whom we refer for exercise programing. Second, we are implementing projects designed to determine the extent to which poor sleep predicts sports performance and injury risk in athletic populations. I am strong advocate of undergraduate research, having mentored over 50 undergraduate student researchers since arriving at Towson in 2012, and remain committed to building a state-of-the-art training/research program capable or clinically relevant instruction and research excellence.
