Students from Historically Underserved Groups in Higher Education

Traditionally, Historically Underrepresented Minority (HURM) students are members of groups that have 鈥渉istorically comprised a minority of the US population.鈥� 

Current census data indicates that this term should be redefined and instead of underrepresented, we refer to underserved students (African American/Black, Asian, Hispanic, American Indian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander and multiracial individuals) plus first-generation students and low-income students. In specific instances, other groups of students may also be considered underrepresented such as other ethnicities, veterans, adult learners, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+, different religious groups and different economic groups.
